“No Chance, No Way”
When a guy says “I love you” to a girl, the typical description that follows tends to involve giddiness, swooning, butterflies in the stomach . . . However, for Allie Collins (the main character of Lingering Echoes and its novella, Rumors) that is not the case. On the contrary, 17-year-old Allie is more likely to break up with a guy for ludicrously uttering those cliché words, all while running in the opposite direction. In fact, you could say that one of Allie’s songs would be “I Won’t Say (I’m in Love)” from Disney’s Hercules.
Having grown up in a family where her parent’s marriage ended after Allie’s father cheated with another woman, Allie’s perception of love and commitment is tainted. In Allie’s words, “I guess I’ve just developed the mentality that, if two married people with a family can’t make it work, there was no point in trying to make anything out of high school relationships. What’s the purpose in putting your heart into something that’s going to end anyway?”
On a personal level, as the author I will admit that Allie’s teenage vision and understanding of love came from my very own perceptions when I was her age. My own parents had a rocky marriage and with the growing rate of divorce, I had the fearful expectation that any serious relationship would eventually come to an end. There is one scene in Lingering
Echoes when Allie is talking to the charming, protective Aaron Jackson and she says, “Sure, I’ve had a couple ‘boyfriends,’ if you want to call it that—each of whom declared their love for me after a month or something ridiculous like that. Naturally, I broke up with them because anyone who thinks you can fall in love that fast is absurd.” I have distinct memories where I did this very thing to a couple of high school boys. I purposely kept the emotional depth of my relationships at arm’s-length, thinking that avoiding love would keep the relationship from getting complicated. It wasn’t until I was in college and dating my persistent husband that my view of love—which truly originated from fear of failure—changed for the better. He was another guy in my life who fell in love and spoke those taboo words to me after only a month, sending me reeling inside and so close to pulling the plug again. However, his playful patience won me over and we have been married for almost nine years now.
So what would I say to my high school self and to Allie Collins? Probably what Aaron Jackson says to Allie in return: “You’re afraid. You don’t let anyone get close to you because you’re afraid of getting hurt.” Sometimes it takes hearing our emotions pointed out to us in order to work through them. There are levels to love, and you won’t know where it can go
if you don’t give it a chance.
Be sure to follow Allie Collin’s journey of first-love (will she or won’t she?) by reading Lingering Echoes, a novel that dances with mystery and perhaps even some romance.
